Remote Desktop for Mac 10.9.4 often causes spinning wheel of death when copying from Windows machine

Starting in the last version or two, I frequently get the "spinning wheel of death" after using Remote Desktop for Mac to copy from the remote Windows client. This manifests when I switch back to the mac and try to switch to Slack -- Slack will be frozen for 30 seconds to several minutes with the colorful spinning pinwheel.

Many people have been experiencing this issue, both recently and in the last several years:

Please look into this, it's a productivity killer. And if there's anything I can grab for you that will help (like a snapshot of a process using  the Mac activity monitor) please let me know.

EDIT: I just attached a sample and spindump of Slack (the macOS process that gets the spinning wheel of death after copying text on the remote windows machine).

I confirm that the problem is still happening (with the latest versions). It's annoying, it freezes several times a day for more than half a minute, more often. Slack also freezes. It always happens to me when using the clipboard, but regardless of whether I want to paste something into Slack, I just switch from the remote desktop to the Slack window and the whole thing crashes.

John_Spencer What does it look like with a solution? Is anyone planning to fix this problem? Thank you.

I would like to also add that this is a continuous problem with Windows APP 11.1.5 (2585).

It happens to me 6+ times a day, and the only thing that helps is killing the windows app. It will go away for a little bit but come right back.

Copy and paste seem related, but I have it happen sometimes when I switch back to my macbook and click on Slack, Chrome or Edge.

I can offer up that this problem affected me on my old Intel-based Mac (which I last used in November 2024) and affects me today on my M4-based Mac which is my daily driver.

The problem appeared to start for me when the app was switched from the Mac Remote Desktop App to the Windows App.

As mentioned by someone else in a different thread, the issue seems to crop up more frequently when I am cutting/pasting formatted text.  I find that if I stick to using the clipboard on plain text I can avoid the issue.

Also observed on my host while using Windows App 11.1.4 (2557) on MacOS Sequoia 15.4.1 for Apple M1 Max architecture. This problem has affected every version of Windows App on ARM-based MacOS since its initial public release. I don't know if it affects x86 MacOS.

It seems to affect Microsoft Edge browser and related apps. Slack is particularly prone to the problem, and I believe that is because even the desktop app for Slack is still a browser-based app. But to be clear, I get this spin wait when copy/pasting from Windows App into Microsoft Edge in general, not just Slack.

Sometimes, I don't even make it to the paste operation, or had no intention of pasting at all, but something was on the Windows clipboard when I switched context. The spin wait begins when I merely switch into the MacOS instance of Edge or Slack.

Normally, the spin wait lasts 60-90 seconds, during which the affected app (Edge or Slack) is unresponsive. Eventually, the spin wait resolves on its own and you can then carry on with whatever you wanted to do, but it's very inconvenient to have to wait for it so frequently.

I am pretty certain this is due to some intereaction between Windows App and Edge, because I can end the spin wait immediately by exiting Windows App. I don't have to log out of the remote Windows session, merely exiting Windows App is sufficient. I can then immediately restart Windows App and reconnect to the remote session. But of course that is also inconvenient.

Same issue. I average probably 2-3 hours per day on RD with frequent copies in/out of the client. I've had it happen when copying from RD to Chrome and Sublime. Today, I have gotten the beachball of death 4 times. MacBook Pro M3, everything up to date.

Yes -- this happens all the time and my brand new MacBook Pro is frozen for minutes.  Please fix this Microsoft.
